The 2012 Los Angeles area AIDS Walk will take place on Sunday, October 14 beginning on Santa Monica Boulevard in West Hollywood. IBG is thrilled to once again be participating in the walk this year by registering a team and securing sponsorships. This annual event benefiting AIDS Project Los Angeles has been taking place since 1985. Founded during the height of the AIDS epidemic by grassroots organizer Craig R Miller, the first event expected to draw a crowd of around 1,000 supporters and raise $100,000. However, on July 28, 1985 in Los Angeles, 4,500 brave people assembled at Paramount Studios and raised an amazing $673,000. In the years since, AIDS Walk LA has become the largest AIDS fundraising event in California. Since the walk’s inception, AIDS Walk LA has drawn over a half-million participants and over 72 million dollars has been raised.
For the past two years, the walk has been hosted by Drew Carey and past celebrity participants include Gillian Anderson, Sandra Bullock, Alan Cumming, Jamie Lee Curtis, Willem Dafoe, Ted Danson, Whoopi Goldberg, Kelsey Grammer, Felicity Huffman, David Hyde-Pierce, Elton John, Angela Lansbury, John Lithgow, Madonna, Eric McCormack, Megan Mullally, Sarah Jessica Parker and Ryan Seacrest.
Not only is this event important to IBG because of the need to raise funds to fight HIV/AIDS but also because the walk serves as a wonderful example of grassroots fundraising and community activism coming together in a hugely successful way. We walk to help make a difference in the lives of those affected by HIV/AIDS and we’d love for you to join us!
