Stories in the News: Africa’s Two Female Heads of State to Accept Awards at The Africa-America Institute’s Awards Gala
On this coming Wednesday evening, September 26th, Africa’s two female heads of state, Her Excellency President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf of the Republic of Liberia and Her Excellency President Joyce Banda of the Republic of Malawi, will be be honored with distinguished awards at a black tie gala in New York City.
Now in its 28th year, the annual gala is being thrown by The Africa America Institute (AAI) and is always held during the first week of the UN General Assembly. Founded in 1953, the AAI is dedicated to advancing education and professional training for Africans as well as promoting a stronger discourse between Africa and America through education, training and dialogue.
President Sirleaf and President Banda are specifically being honored for their forward thinking and strong commitment to female education and empowerment in their home countries. As IBG has been fortunate enough to raise money for a variety of charities in Africa and as an all female organization, it’s wonderful and inspiring to see two such distinguished female heads of state being honored for their successful strides in African women’s rights and leadership.
