“Intellectual freedom depends upon material things. Poetry depends upon intellectual freedom…That is why I have laid so much stress on money and a room of one’s own.”

-Virginia Woolf, “A Room of One’s Own”

A Room Of Her Own (AROHO) is the largest nonprofit foundation working solely on behalf of women writers. As IBG is an all female organization working in the artistic field, we were really drawn to this organization and their mission.

Like IBG, AROHO believes poetry, art, writing and creating is not a luxury but a necessity and an integral part of culture the world over. The name for the organization is taken from a famous essay written by Virginia Woolf entitled “A Room of One’s Own,” in which Woolf calls for women to have the means and space necessary in order to create. AROHO aims to expand upon this vision from Virginia Woolf and bridge the gap which often happens between a woman’s economic circumstances and her artistic vision. With this gap in mind, the foundation offers a $50,000 Gift of Freedom Award every year to a deserving female writer. It’s the largest grant of its kind to a female writer in the US.

Their passion doesn’t stop at providing funds to women either; they also work to help women through their creative journey from inspiration, production and to the commercial marketplace. Not only are female writers supported but female visual artists as well. They also offer unique writer’s retreats and conferences throughout the year for women to gather, become inspired and share experiences. If you’re interested in participating, the next day conference will be held Saturday, October 6th in Austin, Texas. They also run a blog called AROHO Speaks which features writings from retreat participants and friends of AROHO.
